Take up your cross
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
Why did Jesus say that they would have to take their cross daily and follow Him?
Because Jesus knew that we would be faced with many obstacles in our lives. Every day is a fight against our flesh for ungodly things or ungodly behavior, a fight against ungodly talk, a fight against sin. Every single day we have to consciously choose the way of God instead of the way of the world. We don't just decide to be a Child of God and that is the end of it. It is not the easy road we take. In fact, it is harder. The devil will work harder to corrupt the people of God over the average atheist. Why would the devil need to corrupt someone who isn't a believer? They did it already to themselves!
No, the devil works his butt off to try to damage, destroy, and twist every thing that us as Christians hold dear so that just for one moment we are weak. For one moment we might slip into sin, or for one moment we might decide, "What if I was wrong about this?".
We have to choose every day to live for Christ. We get no days off. And honestly, I don't want them. I don't want ONE DAY to pass where I decide not to be on the side of Christ.
So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
Jesus did not say, just pull your cross a little each day. He said TAKE UP YOUR CROSS.
Pick it up with full strength. Every day you must fight for Jesus. Every day you must fight off the devil's advances. Every day you must rally and conquer against temptation and sin.
It is what we are supposed to do. It is what Jesus said. It is what God wants.
It is what I am going to do.
